About MKTYG
Marketing Your Game (MKTYG for short) is a simple blog where you will find strategies, tips, how-tos, 101's, templates, personal thoughts, and rants on all things related to marketing and operations in the gaming industry, written by professionals actively working in the industry.
MKTYG is a passion project started by Ricardo Lozano in August 2025.
Why?
I've always been passionate about Indie Games. I truly believe that indies will eventually dominate the gaming industry, and AAAs will be forced to stop their overly predatory practices and produce quality products again.
My mission is to help indie developers get a new perspective on marketing and help them understand how to approach promoting their games among so much noise in the industry. My marketing philosophy is that there is no right answer to marketing a game; it is all a game of trial and error, and you could do the exact same strategy for hundreds of different games, and you will get hundreds of different results because there is no such thing as a "right thing to do" in marketing.
Should you believe all that I say?
NO. You should not take anything in this blog for granted. I will talk from my experience and my own perspective, but as I said above, it does not mean it will work on your game. Marketing is a game of trial and error, and I highly encourage you always to be skeptical of what you read on blogs like these and find what works for you and your game.
My qualifications
I work at a marketing agency for video games. I have been responsible for marketing and launching over 200 games and counting. I started as a community manager, then got promoted to marketing team lead, and eventually made it to operations, where I am responsible for the entire agency's performance.
I have worked with flat-screen games such as Ready or Not, Party Animals, Six Days in Fallujah, Stalcraft, Mortal Sin, Black Mesa, and VR titles such as Walkabout Mini Golf, Puzzling Places, Job Simulator, NFL Pro Era II, and Dungeons of Eternity, among others.
My strategies have earned me a total of 27 awards, including four Nyx Grand and five Nyx Gold Awards for Content Marketing Strategy, Social Media Campaign, Social Promotions & Contests, Social Engagement, and others.
My story
I have a background in music (I'm a professional electric bass player), and have been a gamer since I have memory. One day, while working my super boring 9 - 5 job, I decided that I wanted to make free video game music for indie games on itch.io, and so I released five free songs for developers to use in their games.

Then, a year after I started making video game music, I decided that I wanted to try my hand at making my own game. I learned and practiced for a while, and then joined a 72-hour game jam, and after three days of intense work, I released my very first game, Spherix.
Spherix gameplay
As you can see, this game is nothing out of the ordinary. It is, in fact, extremely basic, and anyone could recreate it in a few minutes after following some basic tutorials or using AI.
Yet, Spherix landed #15 overall out of 144 entries. What?
Well, it turns out that Spherix was catching people's attention thanks to the catchy color palette and thumbnail I created for it. I put it together in 15 minutes, but unlike most of the other games in the jam, I had a thumbnail, custom background, and controls graphic. It felt like a complete product (even though it's far from being one), which led people to play the game and give it a rating. There were dozens of great games in the jam with a much higher complexity and much more fun than Spherix, but they didn't even make the rankings because they looked uninteresting, and they ended the jam without a single review.
This is where I realized that marketing games could be an interesting avenue to explore for me, and the rest is history.

Will MKTYG be monetized at some point?
NO. Marketing Your Game will be free. Forever. There is no course, book, webinar, guide, etc. This is my place to write my thoughts down on this ever-changing industry, and it will remain a free resource for Indie Developers forever.
Donations are humbly accepted through BuyMeACoffee. There might be a paid tier in the future for supporters, which might grant early access to articles but all content will eventually be freely available to everyone.

Do you offer paid services?
No, at the moment I am unable to take on any sort of paid consultancy or work. I am more than happy to answer any questions on the Discord server above in my free time, though.
Final thoughts
I hope that you can find something of value in Marketing Your Game (MKTYG) that helps you promote your indie game to new audiences or open your mind to new perspectives in marketing and promotion that can help you come up with your own strategies.
MKTYG is a passion project that I will maintain in my free time and thus will likely have very sporadic posts (likely one every month or so), but I'll do my best to write as much as possible!
